John ASTWOOD
(1610 - Abt 1653/54)
He was titled and at times went by Captain John Astwood.
From the Freeman Families of New England: "John Astwood, was born in 1610 at Little Hadham, Hertfordshire, England. Abbott gives his English home as Stanstead Abbey, Hertfordshire. He arrived at Boston in 1635 on the ship Hopewell and settled in Roxbury. In 1639 he removed to Milford Colony in present-day Connecticut. He was a founder of Milford and was one of its first judges in 1639. In 1644, when Milford and several other towns united to form the New Haven Republic, he was one of the first two deputies for Milford. In 1654 he returned to England. In his will of 27 June 1654, written at "Abutley", he calls himself "of Milford", indicating that England was not intended to be his permanent residence. "Abutley" is not a known place, but it may be a shortening of Abbots Langley, a village near Stanstead Abbey and Little Hadham in Hertfordshire."
