Kittie (Kitty) Maria SHAW
(10 Jun 1867 - 21 Jul 1934)
From her obituary, 26 July 1934:
"Funeral services were held at the home at 2 o'clock and at the Nashville church at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Frank Sperry, a prominent pioneer resident of Martin county, who died very suddenly at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Al Thompson at Askov, Minn., July 21. Rev. J. W. Caswell of Mankato officiated.
Mrms. Sperry had driven up to Askov for a visit and had been there a week. Saturday evening on their return to the daughter's home from a trip to Askov they were about to retire when Mrs. Sperry was stricken. Death is believed to have been due to a sudden heart attack, as she had been in her usual health.
Mrs. Frank Sperry, born Kitty Shaw, was the daughter of Mrms. Samuel Shaw. She was born June 10th, 1867, at Walnut, Illinois. When a year old, she came with her parents to Martin county, where they settled near Fox Lake. Here she received her early training and grew to womanhood.
December 25th, 1887, she was united in marriage to Frank Sperry. Since that time she has been an outstanding figure in the Nashville community. To this marriage eight children were born, all of whom, with the father, survive her. The children are: Mrs. Al Thompson of Askov, Mrs. Gerald Tomlinson, Granada, Mrs. Fred Drewes, Chicago, Mrs. John Jurgenson, Nashville, Bert Sperry of Nashville, Ralph Sperry of Mason City, and Bud Sperry of the home. Guy Sperry of Nashville is a stepson, and Mrs. Will Eaton of Granada a step-daughter. Mrs. Sperry is also survived by Mrs. Frank Dorothy of Nashville, her only sister, and two brothers, one living in North Dakota and one in Idaho. 25 grandchildren survive.
The deceased was buried in the Nashville cemetery. We extend our sympathy to the husband, children, and other relatives."
A second obituary reads:
"Funeral services for Mrs. Frank Sperry of Nashville township, who died at the home of her daughter Mrs. Al Thomsen at Askov, were held at the family home in Nashville followed by services at the Nashville church Wednesday. Burial was in the Nasshville cemetery. Mrs. Sperry had been a member of Starlight Rebekah lodge of Winnebago for many years and was a past noble grand. Services at the grave were conducted by that order.
She was born in Bureau county, Illinois, 67 years ago, and came with her parents to Martin county in a covered wagon when she was a year-old babe. She made her home there continuously with the exception of a year or two spent in Winnebago. She was married December 25, 1888, to Frank H. Sperry, and they came to the old Sperry homestead in Nashville where she took up her life work as homemaker.
To this union were born five sons and four daughters: Ralph of Mason City, Iowa; Harold, who was taken away in early childhood; Burton, at home; Byron, still living on the old home farm; Bernard, who passed away in infancy; and Mrs. John Jurgensen of Granada, Mrs. Fred Drewes of Chicago, Mrs. Gerald Tomlinson of Granada, and Mrs. Al Thomsen of Askov, Minn., and besides her husband and children, she leaves her stepchildren, Mrs. Wm. Eaton of Granada and Guy Sperry of Winnebago, and two brothers and a sister, Mrs. Frank Dorothy of Granada, Manley Shaw of South Dakota and Ed Shaw of Idaho, as well as twenty-one grandchildren, five step grandchildren who never knew any grandma but her, whom they all love."
