The Last Will and Testament of William Evans of Garth, Llanddewi Brefi.(St David's 1854. SD/1854/161 W)
The will was made on the 16th of December 1853 by William Evans of Garth, Llanddewi Brefi, Freeholder.
Firstly he deals with his wife (presumably Mary but he doesn't name her).
He gives her £20 per annum (£1,170.60 in 2005) for life to be paid by eldest son Daniel. He also stipulates that if his wife will live at Garth with her son Daniel she will receive half the produce of the whole stock of Garth Farm. If she quits Garth for any reason she may take with her any household goods that she wishes. She is also to receive the interest on £300 at 4% paid to her by Daniel. At the time of writing his will, William Evans estimated the stock of Garth Farm as being worth £300 (£17,559 in 2005).
He also gives to his wife the rent of Cefnybedd in the hamlet of Gogoyan to be held in trust to be paid by her towards the careful keeping of son William. If son William outlives his mother then his brother Daniel is to pay the rent of Cefnybedd towards the care of William for his lifetime.
He also gives to his wife interest on a £100 (£5,853 in 2005) out of the above £300 during the time of her life. After her death the £100 is to be divided equally between the children of daughter Margaret.
To his son Daniel and his heirs he gives all the land, houses and Factory, except for Cefnybedd, during the life of his mother and brother William. He gives Daniel all the stock and everything else on the Farm of Garth.
He gives his wife and son Daniel, in trust for his son William, the interest on £700 (£40,971 in 2005) at 4% per annum, for his care for life. He states that William is to live with his son-in-law Thomas Davies and daughter Anne. After William's death, son Daniel will pay £100 to each of his sisters Anne, Mary and Eleanor.
He also leaves to his three daughters £166 13 s. 4 d. to be paid one year and a quarter his death.
He gives to his granddaughter Mary Anne Davies, daughter of Eleanor, £100 when she is of age with the interest from one year and a quarter from his death.
He commends his daughter Margaret and granddaughter Mary Jones to the kind consideration of his 'beloved wife'.
He gives to his daughters Anne, Mary and Eleanor £100 after the death of their mother, to be paid to them by Daniel.
He instructs that the rest of his estate should go to his wife, after paying all of his debts.
He names his son Daniel and son-in-law Thomas Davies as his executors.
The will was witnessed by Edward Evans, Curate of Llanddewi Brefi and Jonathan Richard.
There is a codicil.
He wills that daughters Anne, Mary and Eleanor should have £100 instead of
£166 13 s. 4 d.
To his granddaughter he now gives £100 when she is of age.
Instead of leaving the interest on £100 of bond to his wife during her lifetime and £100 to be divided between the children of Margaret, he now gives £200 (£11,706 in 2005) in trust to his wife and executors, to give to Margaret and her children in anyway they please in one year and a quarter after his death.
The will was administered at the Consistory Court of the Diocese of Saint David's on the 8th of May 1854. William Evans had died on the 30th of December 1853 and his eldest son Daniel Evans of Gorwydd now of Garth was the main beneficiary. William's personal estate was worth about £450 (£26,338.50 in 2005)
