Daniel EVANS the Last Evans Quaker
(Abt 1738 - 1782)
Known as "Tha Last Evans Quaker"
Garthfrefi, Llanddewi Brefi.
Now the farm called Garth, to the west of Llanddewi Brefi village and near the banks of the river Teifi. There are three farms named Garth within one and a quarter miles of Llanddewi Brefi marked on Colby's map of 1831 and on the modern OS maps; the history of each is some what confused.
We know that Evan Dhu was of Garth Vrevi and Garth Ystrad and that his great grandson the Rev. Thomas Davids, clerk, who married Grace, daughter of John Hall by Jane Laugharne. Their eldest son James married Frances, daughter of Thomas Mores of Hollwell, Oxfordshire by Hester, daughter of William Johnson of Wydford, Oxon. Dates are lacking.
Francis Jones notes that Daniel Evans, Quaker, of Garth, son of Anne died c. 1783. His descendant, Daniel John Evans of Gorwydd, and later of Garth married Margaret Milne. Their children died tragically young - a son in childhood and a daughter, who married Dr John Rowland of Pontrhydyfendigaid, and died in 1890, aged only 23, having given birth to three sons and a daughter.
Daniel inherited the Garth estate died in 1901. Rowland John, who was of Argoed died a year before his elder brother in 1900. The third son, Robert, who lived at Garth and served as a Cardiganshire County Councillor died in 1928 aged 60, his wife having pre-deceased him by six months aged 55.

Daniel Evans guided John Player and his friend to John Goodwin's house at Esgairgoch. He was the last of the Quaker family who lived at Garth. The families of Garth and Werndriw seemed to have been the two chief supports of local Quakerism. He was wont to go sometimes to a place beyond Cader ldris to worship with Friends residing there. Daniel Evans died in 1783, and was buried with his kindred in the south-west side of the Werndriw graveyardResidence
Daniel was a freeholder of Garth 1n 1760, listed in Cardiganshire Freeholders in 1760 by J.H.Davies M.A.Will
The Last Will and Testament of Daniel of Garth, Llanddewi Brefi.(St Davids 1782 SD/1782/97 W)
The will was made on the 9th of March 1781. This is believed to be the will of Daniel Evans of Garth, Llanddewi Brefi.
He leaves all to his first son John Evans. His messuages, tenements and lands in the hamlet of Garth Ystrad in the Parish of Llanddewi Brefi commonly known as Tir y Garth.
or if he were to die then to his second son David
or if he were to die to his third son William
or if he were to die to his four daughters Margaret, Mary, Jane and Anne. To be equally divided between them "share and share alike".
He makes the following gifts -
To first daughter Margaret the sum of £10 (£628.50 in 2005) to be paid to her when she reaches sixteen years by his son John.
To second daughter Mary the sum of £10 to be paid to her when she reaches sixteen years by his son John.
To third daughter Jane the sum of £10 to be paid to her when she reaches sixteen years by his son John.
To fourth daughter Anne the sum of £10 to be paid to her when she reaches sixteen years by his son John.
To second son David the sum of £15 (£942.75 in 2005) to be paid to him when he reaches sixteen years by his son John.
To third son William the sum of £15 to be paid to him when he reaches sixteen years by his son John.
If any should die then the monies should be shared equally by the others.
Also to his wife Anne £2.0s 0d. (£120.70 in 2005) "of good and lawful money of Great Britain" every year of her life, paid by son John from the Real Estate.
David Davies of Glanrhocca and Morgan Davies of Llwyn to be trustees of the will and guardians of the children while they are infants.
First son John Evans to be sole executor. David Davies of Glanrhocca and Morgan Davies of Llwyn to be executors in trust until John reaches the age of majority (21 years). David Davies and Morgan Davies are also to be the tutors and guardians of John and all the children.
The will was witnessed by David Jones, David Lloyd and David Williams and was signed and sealed by Daniel Evans.
The will was administered on the 22nd of October 1782. The surrogate (Probate Court Official) was John Rogers.
