Notes
Military
Before joining the Royal Irish Regiment (RIR) he served with the malitia in Thurles. John (Regimental number 6821) served with the RIR from November 1901 to February 1903 in India . From February 1903 to February 1905 in South Africa, and from February 1905 to October 1907, again in India. From 1908 to 1914 he was in the Army Reserve when he worked as a railway signalman and a postman. On the 7th of August 1914 he was called-up and served with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Belgium.He attained the rank of Lance Corporal and Acting Corporal and was wounded at the battle of Ypres receiving a gun-shot wound to the right thigh. Consequently he was discharged from the army on the 25th of May 1916.
John was awarded the Victory Medal, the British Medal and the 1914 Star.
