Also known as James Thomas McConnell. James Thomas was born before Nan c y m arried Philip and the name of his f ather is unknown. He lived and d i e d at a home he built (or had built) on Obey's Creek a s hort distance n o r theast of theold Irvington school house and church. T his house was b u i lt on land he had bought from Abraham Compton II, his f ather-in-law. T h e h ouse is still in good and livable condition and is n ow occupied by C l a ude Gillenwater (1990s).This is the home where Sara h Elizabeth McCon n e ll (Thomas' 12th child) and Samuel Elbert Smith, her h usband, raised t h e ir family. Of course there had been changes made in t he house over t h e y ears. This old house was at one time a U. S. Post O ffice (1902-19 2 9 ) named Mack, VA. This post office was on the Star Rou te from Gate C i t y, VA to Jessie, VA and Samuel E. Smith was its only po stmaster. On t h e n ortheast of this old home is believed to be the final resting p lac e o f T homas McConnell and other family members; however, the only gr av e m a rkers that could be found were for Samuel Smith and his wife.
