The youngest child and second daughter of Ellen (Persson) and John Johnson , Elfrida "Freda E. Bates" was born January 14, 1891 at Grove City, Swede Grove Township, in Meeker County, Minnesota.When Freda was four years old her mother died. She and her brother Ernest went to live with her Grandparents ,the Petersons/Pearsons Andrew Pearson and Catherine Pearson on their farm on Peterson Lake, near Grove City,MN. While their older sister, Hulda went to live in Litchfield.Mn
Freda attended nursing school in Glendive, Montana and there she met and married Leon Scoville Bates . On 15 December 1928, Donald Scoville Bates was born to them in Minneapolis.
Divorced from Leon in 1930, Freda remained in Minneapolis where she worked in area hospitals
