Individual Details

Alta Luoella Strickland

(1877 - 16 Jun 1940)

Mother of William Wilder O'Hara born 1901

From Joan Bates's notes in the early 90s:

taught piano, played cribbage, cheerful, happy

Alta, the mother of Wilder, and her daughters were very skilled in sewing and crafting. Alta taught piano in Wabasha. She played cribbage with her husband Charles Gilbert when he came home for lunch. Wilder and Martha played cribbage as do my sons and I.

These are the birth years of the children born to Alta and John Strickland: Edward 1874, Alta 1876, William 1879, John 1881, and Vernon 1881.

I suspect that Vernon Strickland is the father of the Vernon Strickland who was murdered when he was mayor of Lake City some 26 years back. The writer of Grumpy Old Men is Mark Steven Johnson, the son of Nancy Gilbert, my half-cousin and she is the daughter of Charles Gilbert, who was a policeman in Wabasha. Aunt Alma's husband, Carl Munson, was mayor there in 1949.
