The following article appeared in the Salina Journal on July 19, 1957, page 6;"Mrs. Lee Pennel and daughter, Marcy, Downey, Cal. have been visiting Mrs. Pennel's sister, Ada Smith, 240 S. 8th. Mrs. Pennel is the former Ethel Smith."

The following obit appeared in The Salina Journal, April 15, 1957, page 10:"The funeral for Lee Pennel, about 47, 8663 Meadow Road Downey, Calif., was held in California Saturday. Mr. Pennel was brother-in-law of Ada and Jake Smith of the Smith clothing store. He was well-known in Salina through visits here. Mr. Pennel was born on a farm in Missouri. He had been with the Prudential Insurance Company about 20 years before joining the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company about eight years ago. Mr. Pennel died unexpectedly Thursday of a heart attack. Surviving are the widow, Ethel, and two daughters, Marcy, 14, and Norma Lee, 10."
