His marriage record states his birth date is abt 1818. In his children's birth records in 1852, his birth date was abt 1822. In 1842 it was abt 1815 and in 1850 it was abt 1817. His 1860 death certificate states abt 1822. I used abt 1817.Miscnote
We know of Simon Smith because his name is on Jacob Smith's gravestone and death certificate. According to Gloria Megdal Schwartz, his granddaughter, he was a carriage maker and wealthy. Simon Smith, according to family legend, was either a blacksmith to the Czar of Russia or a carriage maker. The most plausible explanation (re Lillian Smith Shaw) is that originally he was a blacksmith in Mariampol and/or Koenigsberg) who later became a carriage maker and who later brewed hops and imported horses while exporting hops. According to Lillian Smith Shaw, her father, Isador Smith, told her that one day there was a parade in Prussia and the emperor saw the horses of Simon Smith and wanted them. Therefore, he invited Simon Smith to the palace for tea and expressed his desire for the horses. However, this is questionable since this is a common legend among families from Russia. His death certificate, his marriage record and his 3 children's birth records all state that he was a blacksmith.Simon Smith was married twice. There are seven known children. There are three known branches that eventually came to America: the descendants of Jacob Smith, the descendants of Rachel Smith Levin, and the descendants of Anna Smith Miller. I believe that Jacob is from the first marriage and Rachel and Anna are from the second marriage.
Marriage
Based on an analysis of his children's birthdates, his second marriage probably occurred between 1853 and 1858 or about 1855.Endnotes
