Obit
This obit is from the January 27, 2011, Cleveland Jewish News:"Jeannette Silber (nee Moshantz), founder of the Joseph S. and Jeannette M. Silber Hope Lodge, died Jan. 19 at age 107. Mrs. Silber was determined to bring a Hope Lodge to Cleveland after attending a 1991 meeting of the American Cancer Society's Excalibur Club in Baltimore. There she visited a Hope Lodge facility, which provided housing to Johns Hopkins cancer patients. Mrs. Silber chose Little Italy as the location for the Cleveland lodge due to its proximity to Cleveland's hospitals. She checked on the construction site almost daily for two years, stepping over the lumber and concrete in her trademark sling-back high heels. Decision-makers initially wanted her to locate Hope Lodge elsewhere in Cleveland or in Columbus, and she finally told them at a meeting she could donate her money elsewhere. Men don't have much regard for women's brains. They fought me all the way, she told the CJN in a 2003 article, Grand dame of Hope Lodge turns 100 (CJN, July 17, 2003). Cleveland's Hope Lodge, which provides a no-cost home away from home to patients undergoing cancer treatment at any Cleveland area hospital, opened in 1995. Mrs. Silber visited regularly, socializing with the guests, often surrounded by them as she stepped through the door. She celebrated her 106th birthday there. A Cleveland native and lifelong member of The Temple-Tifereth Israel, Mrs. Silber was believed to be the oldest confirmant in the U.S. when she participated in a confirmation ceremony at age 98. Her family temporarily moved out of Cleveland in her youth, so she missed confirmation with her peers. With her husband Joseph, Mrs. Silber frequently traveled across the Atlantic to meet with international leaders during World War II, and they hosted many well-known figures in their home. Mr. Silber purchased the land to house Council Gardens senior facility, and Mrs. Silber spent three nights a week for 13 years cooking and serving meals to its residents. She spent much of their 52-year marriage supporting his charitable work. Mr. Silber headed the Cuyahoga County unit of the American Cancer Society, and after his death, Mrs. Silber established a foundation for hospice care that was later used to maintain Hope Lodge. In 2000, Mrs. Silber established a research fund at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and she contributed to MetroHealth Hospital for breast cancer lectureships. Contributions are suggested to the Joseph S. and Jeannette M. Silber Foundation, c/o Hope Lodge, American Cancer Society."
