Birth

Chjam is the earliest Smith relative that I have found. The only known fact is that he is the father of Szajo. I estimate Chjam's birth (using the 25 year rule) as 1720. He most likely did not have a last name since last names in Poland/Lithuania were not mandated until the early 1800's. Although his great-grandchildren originally had the family name Zelcman (pronounced Saltzman), it was changed to Smith by the mid 1800's. The reason is unknown.
