Military
pension file – yes W15567On 1 August 1832, Benjamin Barton, Esq. aged 74 years and resident of Croydon applied for a pension based on his service in the Revolution. He first enlisted from Royalston, Massachusetts in the company of Capt. Benjamin Gates in the middle of July 1776. The company was attached to the regiment of Col. Jonathan Holman, He served for five months, and the company was in Hartford, Connecticut and the City of New York where they arrived before the end of July. They were in New York until 15 September 1776 when forced to abandon the city. They were then in White Plains at the time of the battle. At the end of his term, he was discharged near West Point. He volunteered from Royalston in July 1777 in the company of Capt. Peter Woodbury. Troops were at Bennington and Half Moon. He was dismissed at Bennington. He again enlisted with Capt. Woodbury in July 1778 and served two weeks as a guard of British prisoners. In July 1780, he enlisted and served three months under Capt. Stearns. He reported he was born in 1758 but had no record of his age. He has presided principally in Croydon since 1781. He was awarded a pension being credited with 10 months, 26 days of service. His widow Mehitable later received the widow’s pension.1
