Edward Scudder Hart

A Patriot of the American Revolution for NEW JERSEY with the rank of PRIVATE. DAR Ancestor # A051464]

He served several enlistments as a private in the New Jersey Militia. He served in battles of Long Island, New York, August 27, 1776 and White Plains, New York on October 28, 1776. Served from 1775-1783. After his father's farm was destroyed in the Revolutionary War he moved to Virginia in 1788. He contracted to build the first jail in Randolph County, VA and he was active in civic affairs. The first land battle of the Civil War was fought on his son, Joseph's, land in the Rich Mountains.



Edward S/O John Hart, signer of Declaration of Independence from N J & Deborah Scudder. In 1788 they moved to Beverley, Randolph Co., Va., now West Virginia, traveling the long distance over the mountains on horseback.
