Deborah Scudder

(Abt 1723 - 28 Oct 1776)

As a young man, John Hart was attracted to a young lady of considerable beauty, Deborah Scudder. He rode his horse approximately 30 miles round trip to court her. About 1740, John Hart married Deborah Scudder of Ewing, who was born in 1721.  For a long time it was believed she was the youngest daughter of Richard Betts Scudder, Sr. and Hannah Reeder, but Richard Scudder, Sr.'s will proven on March 19, 1754, shows she was a granddaughter.  She was the daughter of Richard Betts Scudder, Jr., born in 1691 and died in 1731 and his wife Hannah (believed to be Stillwell). Deborah and John had 13 children. George Washington attended the marriage of their son Edward to Rebecca Watson. Deborah Hart died at home on October 8, 1776, with John at her side.
