John Carlton
(6 Nov 1770 - 12 Aug 1847)
United States Naval Officer. He was the son of Samuel Carlton and Eunice Hunt. William Bainbridge him as master navigator for a cruise into the Southern Atlantic. Bainbridge would purchase Carlton's book, The Complete East India Navigator, or Oriental Navigator. (That book part may not be true -- someone else is listed as the author of that book.) He became the navigator and the pilot of the USS Constitution in 1812. He was commissioned as a Sailing Master, USN, on July 4, 1815.
