He served in the Revolutionary War in Captain Jesse Page's company. He was at Saratoga and Stillwater, and at the taking of General Burgoyne.

Probate Court (Rockingham County); Probate Place: Rockingham, New Hampshire, Probate Records, Vol 55-56, 1832-1833, pp 270-271, will of Joseph Chandler, 6 May 1826.In his will written 6 May 1826 (probate 12 February 1834), Joseph Chandler has the following bequests: oldest daughter Polly wife of Stephen Heath, $30; eldest son Samuel Chandler, $15; second daughter Betsey wife of John Boynton, $40; daughter Judith Chandler, $80, all the produce which is due him at his decease, and all the clothing she makes for him and the wool and the flax; daughter Sarah wife of Silas Whitney, $10; son Joseph Chandler, Jr., $5; and daughter Lydia wife of Amos Baker, $5. John Boynton of Londonderry was named executor.
