Individual Details
William Chandler
(Abt 1598 - 26 Jan 1641/42)
William Chandler (1595-1642) and Annis Bayford (1603-1683)
This is the couple to whom we are most related. They are our ninth great grandparents by one path and our tenth great grandparents by eight different paths (have I mentioned the inbreeding). I will not bore you with all the details. William Chandler/Annis Bayford settled in Roxbury and George Abbot/Hannah Chandler were a founding family of Andover. Hannah Chandler is the daughter of William and Annis, and William and Annis’s three oldest children settled in Andover. The Abbotts and the Chandlers intermarried all over the place creating a tightly woven mesh. For example, in one Chandler family, three of the seven children married Abbotts.
William and Annis came from Stratford England in 1637, settling in Roxbury. Annis and William had seven children, five of whom lived to adulthood, married, and had children. William worked as a tanner. He became a freeman (entered into the church and eligible to vote) in 1640. William and Annis were industrious, economical, sober, pious and respected. With Christian fortitude and submission they endured their trials, privations and dangers, of which they had a large share. They brought up a large family well and trained them in the way they should go, from which they did not depart.
William died in 1642 of consumption. Following his death, Annis married John Dane. John Dane was the father of Francis Dane and John Dane. Francis Dane was the second husband of Hannah Chandler. The daughter of the younger John Dane, Mary Dane, married William Chandler who was one of the sons of William and Annis.
