Pension file – W21029 On 7 April 1818, John Eaton of Bradford, NewHampshire applied for a pension based on his service in the Revolution. Heenlisted as a private soldier in March 1781 for a term of three years in thecompany of Capt. Nicholas Gilman, Col. Henry Dearborn’s regiment of the NewHampshire line. He was discharged at West Point in June 1783. On 11 July 1820,John Eaton then aged 55 years and resident of Fisherfield (later Newbury)provided additional information on his circumstances. He had no real estate,personal estate was valued at $33.50, and he owed $62.67. His household washimself, wife Phebe aged 51 years and lame, James 15 years old, Hannah 13 yearsold, and Ebenezer 11 years old. He described himself as lame and infirm inlimbs and health. John was admitted to the pension rolls in 1818 and received$96 per year. On 5 August 1844, widow Phebe Eaton aged 74 years of Newbury, NewHampshire applied for the widow’s pension. She married John Eaton in December1788 at her father’s house in Washington, New Hampshire, the service performedby Rev. George Laplie. Her name before marriage was Phebe Brockway. She wasborn 29 April 1770. John Eaton died 19 January 1844. The town clerk ofWashington submitted a statement that he could not find the record of themarriage but found the record of the births of two children at Washington: Johnborn 18 October 1790 and Phebe born 17 December 1792. A statement by Phebe’sbrother Jonathan Broackway of Washington made on 2 August 1844 reported thatJohn and Phebe had seven or eight children, five of whom were living: John,Phebe, James, Ebenezer, and Hannah. A statement was given on 5 August 1844 byson James Newton of Newbury stating his father John died at his home on 19January 1844.[1] [1] U.
