On 5 May 1789, Smauel Wardwell of Andover, Massachusetts, for payment of £45, purchased from George Smith of Andover a lot of land lying near Sheperdsfield in Cumberland County near to Otisfield, this being the fifteenth lot in the third range.1
On 14 December 1819, Samuel Wardwell yeoman of Otisfield, in consideration of three hundred dollars, conveyed to his son William Wardwell of Otisfield fifty acres of his homestead farm formerly called Phillip’s Gore. This section was on the northwest part of the farm adjoining the property of Samuel’s brother Peter Wardwell. On 10 July 1822, Samuel leased to William one half of the dwelling house for his use and that of his family for payment of one hundred dollars. This did not give William right to sell the buildings. On 20 March 1827, Samuel Wardwell, in consideration of one thousand dollars, conveyed to Samuel Wardwell, Jr. of Otisfield all of lot number fifteen in the third range that was not previously conveyed to William Wardwell, consisting of about 75 acres, reserving the right of his daughters Polly and Hannah to have a home in the dwelling house while they are unmarried.2
