John Frye was of Basing, Hants, England. He married Ann Stratton in England and the couple with their young children embarked from Southampton in May 1638 for New England on the Bevis. He was first in Newbury was he was admitted as freeman in 1638. He worked as a millwright and wheelwright. By 1645, he relocated to Andover. In 1651, he was one of two men in the county who was licensed to sell strong drink to Indians. It was sold only as medicine, supposedly, and no more than one pint could be sold to a person at a time.
