Individual Details
Charlotte Swan
(1801 - 2 Feb 1895)
William and Charlotte owned and operated an inn in Königsberg, in the region of Neumark, province of Brandenburg, in northeastern Germany, renting out rooms and serving meals and liquor. In the 19th century, Brandenburg was a Lutheran and mostly German-speaking province. After World War II, the part of Brandenburg east of the Oder River was incorporated into Poland. Königsberg is now Chojna, Poland. The greater part of Brandenburg still remains German and is one of the states within the current Federal Republic of Germany.
In 1868, two years after her husband died, Charlotte decided to sell the inn and go to America with William Fredrich, his pregnant wife Caroline, and their two children. Probably the money that was needed to make the journey came from the sale of the inn.
In 1874, Charlotte (spelled Scharlott on the land entry papers) filed for a homestead patent in Nebraska and the family moved to Howells in Adams Township in Colfax County. The family moved to the Stanton area in 1888.
Charlotte raised William, but had no children of her own. She was a small woman and slightly hunch-backed. She became known as "Little Grandmother."
