In the 1920 Census he is living in Kinyon Township, Cass County, North Dakota in dwelling 62 on a farm with his parents and cousin Charles W. Cauthers.
Resided in Section 16 of Kinyon Township, Cass County, North Dakota until 1955 when they moved to Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. From 1942 to 1946 he served in the army in the second World War in Saipan and Pearl Harbor.
In 1995 he was selected the Becker County, Minnesota Senior Citizen.

Herbert A. “Herb” Flatt, 89, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, died Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at St. Mary’s Nursing Center, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
Herb was born on January 25, 1919 the son of Joseph and Martha (Woitzel) Flatt in Grandin, North Dakota. He was raised and educated in Grandin. As a young adult he served in the United States Army from 1942 1945. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor and Saipan. He was united in marriage to Stella Paasch in Fargo, North Dakota on June 2, 1946. They made their home in rural Grandin, North Dakota, where they farmed until 1955. They then moved to Detroit Lakes, where Herb farmed and worked construction. He also helped with the ice harvest and drove the last team of horses used during the harvest. In 1959 he started working at the Erie 34 Supper Club as a custodian until 1964 when he became head custodian at the Becker County Court House. During this time he also drove school bus for Schultz Bus Service and continued farming. During his time at the court house he mentored many adult and youth workers, seeking employment. Herb retired in 1984.
Herb was known for his sense of humor and was a great story teller. He was active in the Detroit Lakes community as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and RSVP Program for Mahube. He received the Becker County Outstanding Senior Citizen award in 1995. Herb was also known for his ability in the garden and won several beautification awards for his yard and the Court House Park. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion and was a past commander. He was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church and held many offices in the church throughout the years.
Herb enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing to polka music and most of all he loved the time spent with his grandchildren.
Herb is survived by his son, John (Cheryl) Flatt of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; daughter, Renee Darnell of Apache Junction, Arizona; eleven grandchildren, Jason Wehmhoefer, John T. (Shan) Flatt, Paul Flatt, Charles Flatt, Jonathan Flatt, Emily Flatt, Molly (Matt) Beaver, Thomas Darnell, Amy Darnell, Josiah Flatt and Megan Flatt; one great granddaughter, Madyson Beaver; four sisters-in-law, Elsie Amundsen of Abercrombie, North Dakota; Velma Sauvageau of Horace, North Dakota; Marge Paasch of Moorhead, Minnesota; Alice Paasch of Fargo, North Dakota; numerous nieces and nephews.
Herb was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Stella (2007), three sons, Douglas, Joel and James, one daughter, Linda Wehmhoefer, four half brothers, Gordon, Vernon, Floyd and Marvin, one sister and brother-in-law, Violet and Merlin Grage.
Funeral Service: Friday, July 25, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
Interment: Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
Visitation: Thursday, July 24, 2008 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota with a prayer service at 8:00 p.m.
