James Hamilton Benson was born at Newbury, Ontario, Canada, August 18, 1860, the son of Rev. and Mrs. M. C. Benson. In 1876, at the age of 16, he came with his parents to Mineral Point, Wisconsin. In 1880 he came to Hudson, Wis. He was married to Amanda Lucks, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Lucks, pioneers of this community, at Hudson on August 23, 1882. His father at that time was a presiding elder of the Methodist Church, residing in Hudson.
In 1886, four years after their marriage, Mr. Benson entered the ministry of the West Wisconsin Conference of the Methodist Church. In 1888 he was ordained deacon by Bishop Andrews at Mauston, and in 1890 he was ordained elder by Bishop Foster at Menomonie. His entire ministry was spent in the West Wisconsin Conference. He retired from the ministry at the age of 70 and he and his wife made their home in Hudson. Here he served as supply pastor at the local Methodist church at various times. Following the death of his wife four years ago, he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Robert Friend on Fourth street. When his health failed him he went to Minneapolis to live with his daughter, Mrs. Roberts.
During the nearly fifty years that he was actively identified with the Methodist Church he served in several parishes in Wisconsin.
