Hudsonite, deputy county clerk awaits liver transplant
By Meg Heaton
Julie Beaudry Bonngard is a familiar face even to those who don't know her. It's probably because she has served as second deputy county clerk of St. Croix County for more than a decade. But you won't find Bonngard at her desk these days. She's at home playing a waiting game.
Bonngard was forced to go on disability last fall after she was diagnosed with liver disease so serious that she will require a liver transplant to survive.
It all began when she was having a tooth pulled by an oral surgeon late last summer. As part of routine examination before receiving anesthetic, the doctor noticed severe swelling in Bonngard's ankles and legs. He advised her to seek her own doctor as soon as possible. But she procrastinated, as she says she is prone to do, until she began to really not feel well, and wearing shoes was becoming difficult.
A test by her doctor revealed dangerously low levels of platelets in her blood. This wasn't the first time Bonngard had heard this. A year before she had been told to see a hematologist about low blood counts, but again she procrastinated. She was referred to a specialist but efforts to get her blood count up with transfusions were unsuccessful. The next step was a biopsy of her liver, which proved difficult due to the fact that her blood was low and would not clot. The biopsy was delayed until she was in better condition. The biopsy was finally performed, but the news was not good. Her liver was diseased and functioning only marginally due to excessive scar tissue. She would need a liver transplant.
Bonngard, 57, had been through serious illness before. She was diagnosed with cancer in her 40s but had been disease-free until now. The problem with her liver was not cancer but was life threatening nonetheless. The news was devastating for Bonngard and her husband, Stan. Stan was already on disability due to severe damage to his back when the news about Julie came. Julie stayed on the job as long as possible but finally her condition, including a severely compromised immune system, made continuing work impossible. Just last week, she suffered a gall bladder attack that landed her in Hudson Hospital. Now any infection or illness is dangerous to Bonngard.
Bonngard was referred to the Mayo Clinic for treatment. She and Stan make multiple trips to the clinic that involve stays of a day to several days. Since going to Mayo, doctors have found tumors in Bonngard's liver and in her stomach that are not of immediate concern considering her prognosis.
Bonngard and Stan have begun preparations for a transplant. It is a long process that is only speeded up if Bonngard's health deteriorates and only if a donor liver becomes available. The couple have been introduced to their transplant team. Julie will see a psychiatrist in preparation for the procedure, and they have together toured the Gift of Life House where transplant patients and their families go to recover after the surgery.
"I had never been to Mayo before all this," said Bonngard. "It is an amazing place and pretty overwhelming -- all the buildings and clinics and hospitals. But I'm so very glad we are as close as we are. They make it all seem so possible."
The doctors have not given the Bonngards a specific time frame for the transplant but they have said Julie won't survive much more than three years without a new liver.
The news was devastating but didn't stop the couple from celebrating the holidays with their children and grandchildren. "It was great to have the kids around. We're a family and none of this changes that. They're a great source of support to both of us," said Bonngard.
Friends and co-workers of Bonngards are reaching out as well. Sandy Gehrmann of the Department on Aging, just across the hall from Bonngard's county office, has spearheaded the effort to help the family. A benefit spaghetti dinner and silent auction is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31, from 3-7 p.m. at St. Patrick's Church, 1500 Vine St. Money raised will be used to help pay for the Bonngards' insurance and medical expenses. Since both are on disability, the couple has had to pay for their own insurance coverage. In addition, funds raised will be supplemented by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, Chapter 30917. The fund-raiser is also being supported by St. Croix County employees and the Hudson Lions Club.
A raffle is also being organized, and the Julie Beaudry Bonngard Benefit Fund has been set up at First Federal Savings Bank. Bonngard said she has been overwhelmed by the support she has received from not just friends and co-workers but from people who she doesn't even know. "I can't say how much everyone's thoughts and prayers and cards have meant. It all helps you get through the days. I am grateful to everyone for their concern, and I believe it will turn out all right."
Julie and Stan Bonngard live in the town of Hudson. For more information on the fund-raiser or to make a donation, call Gehrmann at the Department on Aging, (715) 381-4360.

Julie M. Bonngard, age 67, of Hudson, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Aug. 16, at the Christian Community Home in Hudson.
Julie was born Sept. 18, 1946, in River Falls to parents, Eugene and Margaret (Kolashinski) Beaudry. She grew up in Hudson and graduated from Hudson High School in 1965.
Julie was united in marriage to Stanley Bonngard on July 3, 1965, at the St. Patrick Catholic Church in Hudson. Julie and Stan had known each other since they were 14 years old. Together they began their family shortly after their marriage with the birth of their daughter, Dawn, followed by their two sons, Stan and Jeff.
For ten years, Julie worked at the County Clerk's Office in the St. Croix County Courthouse. The job allowed her to talk and make friends with many people as she was issuing marriage licenses and other documents. Julie was a social butterfly. A liver transplant in 2004, took her out of the workforce. This transplant was followed by several other medical issues that Julie fought for 10 years. Through her struggles, Julie always had a smile on her face.
She loved her family, especially all of her grandchildren. Julie also enjoyed cooking, and even taught her husband to cook when she was no longer able to do so.
Julie will forever remain in the hearts of her husband of 49 years, Stan; children, Dawn (Jeff) Blaiser, Stan (Julie), and Jeff (Hope); grandchildren, Reece and Rhea, Patrick, Samantha, Tyler, Chad and Robert, and Brady; brother, Joe (Kim) Beaudry; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and sisters, Mary Carol Beaudry and Jeannie Miller.
