Deer Hunter Loses Life
While hunting deer Sunday afternoon Ralph Studtman was accidentally shot and killed when a slug from a gun in the hands of Orville Waldroff hit him. The incident was investiaged by Dist. Atty. Kenneth Hayes of Hudson, County Traffic Officers Harry Dieltz and Fritz Van Ranst, Conservation Warden Norman Hicks and Coroner A.M. Ford.
The accident took place on the John Strese farm on Co. Trk. V south of Somerset. Studtmann was in a clump of trees and Waldroff was on a knoll when the shot was fired. The men had been hunting together but got out of sights of each other. Waldroff of R.1, Somerset, Wi., was Studtmann's brother-in-law.
The sun was shining at the time and it is reported Studtmann was wearing a black and red jacket. With Studtmann out of sight and moving about the brush, he was mistaken for a deer and the fatal shot was fired.
Ralph Arthur Studtmann was born Feb. 5, 1928, in the township of Star Prairie, son of Henry and Ella Kastens Studtmann. He was 27 years of age at the time of his death Sunday, Nov. 20.
An employee of Doughboy Industries milling division, Ralph was a veteran, having served with the armed forces from March 23, 1952, to Jan. 20, 1954.
Surviving him are his widow, Diane, of Star Prairie, to whom he was married Nov. 21, 1951; his mother, Mrs. Henry Studtmann, who makes her home in Cylon; 3 brothers, Walter and Edmund of Stillwater, and Verlin, at home, and 7 sisters, Edna (Mrs. Harold Moe), Glenwood City; Alga (Mrs. Ray Derosier), Osceola; Norma (Mrs. Melvin Albright), Glenwood City; Mildred (Mrs. Harry Briese), New Richmond; Elvera (Mrs. Ray Friedrich), Lake Elmo, Minn.; Lorraine (Mrs. LeRoy Larson), Star Prairie; and Leona (Mrs. Chas. Audette), Seattle, Wash.
Visitation was at the Beebe Chapel from Tuesday afternoon to Wednesday noon, and the remains lie in state at the Bethany Lutheran church, Star Prairie, for an hour preceding the service at 2:30 Wednesday, Nov. 23. Rev. Walter M. Abramsom officiated at the funeral service and interment was in New Richmond cemetery. Butler-Harmom Post. No. 80, American Legion, accorded military honors.

Coroner's Jury Rules Hunting Death Accidental
On November 25, a coroner's inquest in the death of Ralph A. Studtman of Star Prairie was held in Hudson. Studtman, 28, was shot by his brother-in-law, Orville Waldroff, while hunting deer in the Town of Somerset Nov. 26. District Attorney Kenneth H. Hayes presented eight witnesses who testified as to the circumstances surrounding the shooting. A coroner's jur of six men ruled that the death was accidental.
