Mrs. Engebretson Funeral is Monday
Mrs. Jacob M. Engebretson, 81 years old, died at her home on Liberty Hill here last Friday, February 11, after a long illness. For some years she had been an invalid, under the constant care of her daughter, Emma.
Karen Knutson was born in South Odalin, Norway, on Dec. 27, 1872. She grew to womanhood in her native country and there she was married to Mr. Engebretson on March 13, 1881. About a year after their marriage they emigrated to America, first locating at Racine, Wis., where they lived until 1883, when they settled near River Falls, Pierce county. In 1921 they moved to Hudson. Last year they observed their 62nd wedding anniversary.
Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Engebretson, four of whom died in infancy. the eldst son, Peter, died here in 1936. A son, William, a member of the merchant marine, died in the service of his country in February 1943.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Julia Lake of Boyceville, Wis., Mrs. Walter Zentis of Hudson, and Miss Emma Engebretson of Hudson; two sons, Alfred of Glenwood City and Melvin of Hudson; 17 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
Mrs. Engebretson joined the Methodist church of Hudson on December 9, 1923 during the ministry of Rev. J. Fisher. Although not able to attend the public service she was a devoted Christian. Gifted with a strong and melodious voice, she found enjoyment in singing her favorite hymns in Norwegian.
Her body lay in state at the Jasper Funeral Home until Monday noon when it was tkane to the Methodist church, where services were held at 2 o'clock, Rev. John T. Agema officiating. Interment was in Willow River cemetery. The pallbearers were Andrew Sangsland, Sam Hannah, Walter Hauke, Charles Dowling, John Mullen and Alfred Ekberg.
NOTE: If the birth and marriage dates here and in Pat Wiff's book, "Is There Any Lutefisk and Lefse Left?", Jacob would have been 21 and Karen age 8 at the time of their marriage and age 10 at the time of the birth of their first son, Peter Edwin.
