Lois Elane Butterfield, a forner Centralia educator, died Monday, July 16, in Centralia. She was 70.
Butterfield was born April 16, 1931, in Mobile, Ala., to William and Rosa (White) Heim.
A star basketball player, Butterfield graduated as class valedictorian from Bayou La Batre High School in 1949. On July 2 of that year, she married Ben Butterfield in Pascagoula, Miss.
During her husband's military career, Butterfield lived in several locations, including Denver, Portland and Japan. Her survivors said she was that nation's first Tupperware sales representative.
After having lived in Waco, Texas, Butterfield came to Centralia with her family in 1971.
In 1975, Butterfield enrolled at Centralia College. She later enrolled at St. Martin's College, Lacey; her survivors said she graduated with honors as that institution's first recipient of a master's degree in education.
From 1979 until 1996, Butterfield taught sixth grade at Centralia's Washington Elementary School.
A former member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Butterfield had served as office vice president of that organization. She had been a scout leader and a member of the Tumwater Area Council of Scouts.
A member of Washington State Retired Teachers Association, Butterfield had served since 1986 as the secretary of Alpenlite Travel Club Chapter 8, and was also a member of Good Sam Tri-Mountain Wanderers Club.
Butterfield's interests included reading, recreational vehicle traveling and sewing. Her greatest love, however, according to her suvivors, was her family, especially her grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband of 52 years, Ben Butterfield, at home in Centralia; two sons, Jason Butterfield, Phoenix, and David Butterfield, Mahwah, N.J.; a daughter, Arlene Powell, Belle Vernon, Pa.; and four grandchildren.
Butterfield was preceded in death by her parents; by a son, Douglas Butterfield, who died in 1978; by a brother, Andrew Heim; and by a sister, Evelyn Slade.
Remembrnaces may be donations to the Centralia College Foundation or to the One-Room School House, Centralia.

A memorial service for Lois Elane Butterfield will begin at 1 p.m. Monday in Sticklin Funeral Chapel with Chaplain Larry Brown officiating. Private interment will take place at Claquato Cemetery, Chablis.
