Clinton Tyler

An undated article found in the Clipping Collection at the Hudson Library’s History Room peaked my
curiosity. It was from the St. Paul Pioneer Press and dated 1910.

Hudson, Wis., July 28--In Spite of the strenuous objections of her father, Gus Staberg of Lakeland, Luella Staberg eloped with her half breed negro adminier, C. Tyler, last night. A stormy scene followed at the Union station and the Hudson police were appealed to by the father of the girl, but Chief O'Keefe refused to act without t a warrant, as the girl was of legal age.
The young couple secured their marriage license last week in Hudson. Parental objections immediately followed and, according to Tyler, his sweetheart was spirited away to Star Prairie. He followed her there and returned with his would-be bride last evening.
Mr. Staberg and Louis Olsen, a relative, the mother of Tyler and others were at the
station when they arrived at Hudson. The girl was appealed to by her father to leave her
sweetheart, but refused.
A fist fight was narrowly averted. Mrs. Tyler stood on the outskirts of the crowd and
declared she was there to see that her boy got a square deal. The couple managed to get on
the Stillwater train and went there presumably to get married today. Feeling is high in Lakeland, where both the persons concerned reside.
A Stillwater marriage license was applied for by the couple and refused upon word from
the relatives of the girl.
The New Richmond and Hudson newspapers ran the story on page 1.

ELOPES WITH HALF-BREED
Lakeland Girl Weds Dusky Lover Despite Parental Objection
Bride Spirited Away to Star Prairie Without Avail
Hudson, July 30--In spite of the strenuous objection of her father, Gus Staberg of Lakeland,
Luella Staberg eloped with her half breed negro admirer, C. Tyler, Wednesday night. A stormy
scene followed at the depot and the Hudson police were appealed to by the father of the girl,
but Chief O'Keefe refused to act without a warrant, as the girl was of legal age.
The young couple secured their marriage license last week in Hudson. Parental
objections immediately followed, and according to Tyler, his sweetheart was spirited away to
Star Prairie. He followed her there and returned with his would-be bride Wednesday evening.
Mr. Staberg and Louis Olsen, a relative, the mother of Tyler and others were at the
station when they arrived at Hudson. The girl was appealed to by her father to leave her
sweetheart, but refused.
A fist fight was narrowly averted. Mrs. Taylor [sic] stood on the outskirts of the crowd and declared she was there to see that her boy got a square deal. The couple managed to get on the Stillwater train and went there, presumably to get married today. Feeling is high in Lakeland, where both the persons concerned reside.
At Stillwater a marriage license was applied for by the couple and refused upon word
from the relatives of the girl.
NEW RICHMOND FIGURES IN THE CASE
Tyler arrived here Wednesday, and stated he had a marriage license issued by County
Clerk Offerdahl, that the prospective bride and he were ready to be married. They were in
Lakeland, and the bride-elect went home to get her clothes intending to be married last
Saturday. But a friend coaxed her to go to Dan Engstrom's in Star Prairie, from which place the
friend is said to have written a taunting letter to Tyler and told him that he might take his
marriage license and have it framed, that he would have no further use for it. The friend further wrote that he had thrown her down, and the result was he could have either girl. The friend said she was going to send the bride-elect west.
With that Tyler donned his war paint, and came to New Richmond. He asked for an
attorney and was directed to Tom Doar. Tom accompanied Tyler to the Engstrom place, where
they were cordially received. Tyler and Miss Staberg had an interview, and the result was the
girl, Tyler and the attorney started for New Richmond without delay. Tyler and Miss Staberg left by the first train for Hudson and were married as stated above.

ELOPERS ARE MARRIED
Lakeland Couple Refused by Hudson Clergy Drive to Boardman
Love found a way in the elopement of Clinton Tyler, a half breed negro, and Miss Luella
Staberg, both of Lakeland, Minn., and the couple were married by a justice in Boardman, after
being refused a marriage license in Stillwater and being turned down by Judge C.A. Disney and
every minister in Hudson, to whom they applied last week asking that the marriage ceremony
be performed.
The parents of the girl made a desperate effort to prevent the marriage, and following the couple's elopement to Stillwater and their return to Hudson Thursday evening, Gus Staberg, father of the would-be bride, and Louis Olson, a relative, attempted to steal the girl from her lover as the train arrived at the union Station. The half breed showed fight, however, and frustrated their attempts.
The two hired a carriage and drove to Boardman where they were married.
Dan Engstrom, Ella’s uncle, resided on Cedar Lake. I didn’t find a marriage for Clinton and Ella in St. Croix county but I did find one for them in Omaha, Nebraska where they were married on the 21st of September. Clinton’s aunt and uncle, Eugene and Lizzie Freling, and his grandfather, Peter Kelly, were already living in Omaha. When they are married in Omaha on September 21, 1910, Clinton states his color is white which is consistent with census records for the following years.
Clinton Tyler's ancestry was tracked using census and other records. From the timeline, it appears his name was likely Samuel Clinton. His mother, Matilda Kelly, had a brother Samuel three years younger than her. When Clinton was born, in 1887, his birth is recorded as Clinton Tyler. I in 1895 he is Clinton, age 8, living with an aunt and uncle, Eugene and Lizzie Freling. In 1900, age 14, he is listed as Samuel and is living with his mother and stepfather, Daniel Malender. In 1905, age 18, he is Clinton and is with his mother, Tillie Melander. In 1910, age 23, he is Samuel C., and is listed with his mother and stepfather, Octave Gardner.
