(1796 - 25 Apr 1842)
From Terje Roghell [troghell@online.no] 25 Nov 2003
Hi Nancy
The track that led me to the right Karen Marie appeared in the papers of the administration of Karen Marie’s father’s estate when he died in 1842. (Hope you understand my English?).
Karen Maria’s parents, Jens Hansen and his wife Karen Maria Christiansdatter, both died in 1842, in VATNE, Alstahaug Parish, and in this document Jens and Karen’s 6 children are mentioned as heirs. The originals of this documents are at the Statsarkiv in Trondheim, Norway, but they are all on roll films. Alstahaug Parish is situated nearby west and south of Hemnes Parish at the Helgeland coast, Nordland County. May be I could get a copy of this records from the Statsarkiv in Trondheim later. (Statsarkiv = keeper of the Rolls).
In this document, Karen Marie, is noted: “Karen Maria, daughter, 21 years old, not married, lives in Valla, Sør Rana”. My commentary: That’s Valla in Korgen - in the municiple of Hemnes.
Details:
Jens Hansen born 1796 in Vatne, married Karen Maria Christensdatter, born 1799 in Sørnes, Alstahaug on 23. of September 1821. At that time Karen Maria was pregnant with her first child, your great grand mother, Karen Maria, and the clergyman made a note in the church-book, publishing the banns for Jens and Karen Maria.
Jens and Karen Maria had at least 6 children: (alive in 1842)
1. Karen Maria born 8. July 1821
baptized in Tjøtta Church 5. August 1821
the baptism confirmed in Alstahaug Church in 1836
married to Petrus Pedersen 24. September 1848 in Hemnes Church
died 16. February 1862 in Solhaug, Hemnes
buried at Korgen Cemetery 28. February 1862
2. Pernille Chirstine born 5. January 1824 in Vasseng, Alstahaug
3. Johanna Chirstine born 22. April 1826 in Vasseng
4. Christiana born 4. February 1833 in Vasseng
5. Henrich Mathias born 31. May 1835 in Vasseng
6. Elen Birgitta born 4. August 1837 in Vasseng
The last 5 children were baptized in Alstahaug Church.
You will find Alstahaug Church on the map in Sandnessjøen. Tjøtta Church is not far from Alstahaug, further south.
Your Karen Maria Jensdatter apparently were a maid servant in the Valla farm in Korgen, Hemnes at the time she married Petrus Pedersen.
If you look in the Hemnes Church-book, written by the clergyman, when Petrus and Karen married in 1848, you will find Karen Maria’s fathers name as Jens Andersen, but in the same Hemnes Church-book written by the parish clerk, her father’s name is only written with a “J” which indicates that there were some confusion on his name.
I will try to support you with more detailed information on Jens Hansen’s ancestors later.
Before Petrus Pedersen married Karen Maria, he had a child with Jonella Olsdatter, living in Røsså, Korgen, Hemnes. This girl child was born on 6. June 1842 at Røsså, named Olava Adriana Petrusdatter when baptized on 10. June 1842 in Hemnes Church, baptism confirmed in Hemnes Church in 1858. Petrus and Jonella were not married, thus Olava was a so called “illegitimate child” - from the church’s point of view..

Æ, æ = AE, ae
Ø, ø = OE, oe
Å, å = AA, aa
