(17 Jun 1840 - 3 Mar 1903)

HSO, 17 Mar 1922, p8, St. Joseph news
Mrs. Michael Thelen who has been confined to her bed the last eight months with paralysis passed away Wednesday morning at the age of 81 years and nine months. She came to St. Joseph with her parents from Germany about seventy-two years ago, was united in marriage to Michael Thelen in May of 1859 and from that time has lived on a farm about three miles east of Houlton where she died. Her husband died in January of 1911. She is survived by nine children--Mrs. P. Gorris, Mrs. O. H. Steindorff and Mrs Alvin Hughes of Amery; Mrs. William Dreschler, Mrs. John Anderson of Houlton; Mrs. Ed Steindorff of the town of Grant; Miss Anna Thelen who resides on the farm; B.B. Thelen of Stillwater; and M. J. Thelen who operates the home farm. She has nineteen grandchildren. The funeral will take place Saturday from Belisle's mortuary.

History of St. Joe Township, written by Mrs. J.W. McKinnon (1884-1960), a long time resident of St. Joseph Township. Presented as a program for the Sunshine Club in 1935 and reprinted in the HSO, 24 July 1975.
"Mich Thelen's wife was Mary Magney. Born in Rhineland, Germany, she was brought here by her parents when they located on what is now the Frank Mardus place. When this young and hopeful couple wed in 1859, for their wedding trip, without benefit of car or bus, train or street car, they a stage coach honeymoon to St. Paul. They walked back to save what limited means they had. Mrs. Thelen told me how she used to serve coffee instead of tea because it was a saving. You see members of her family liked sugar in their tea and fifty cents worth of sugar -- probably about ten pounds, had to do for an entire summer season. She used to make custard pies in preference to other kinds which required more sugar."

Per her obituary, she came to U.S. at age of 10 (i.e, 1850). Also, they came directly to St. Joseph Township in Wisconsin, which contradicts the previous report that they stayed briefly in Galena, Illinois (I would not be surprised to find inaccuracies in an obituary).
