Michael Thelen
(1831 - 1911)
History of St. Joe Township, written by Mrs. J.W. McKinnon (1884-1960), a long time resident of St. Joseph Township. Presented as a program for the Sunshine Club in 1935 and reprinted in the HSO, 24 July 1975.
"Mich Thelen was one of our old timers. He came 75 years ago to settle on a farm in St. Joe. Two of his sons are well known in our community, one as Andrew Thelen of Houlton, the other, Edward Thelen, Judge of Probate Court in Stillwater. A daughter Rose, Mrs. ______ Rivers, long lived where the Posper Rivards now reside. Rose used to teach the Perch Lake school. Then there was her sister, Miss Lucy, who proved herself so efficient a manager of the home farm for many years after the passing of her father.
Michael Thelen may even be remembered by old timers. A native of Germany, he was born on the historic Rhine in 1831. He came to Minnesota in 1856 when Stillwater was a larger place than St. Paul. He moved, in 1857, to the town of St. Joe where he settled on the Thelen homstead in 1863.
Mrs. John Anderson is a daughter of Michael Thelen and a member of our club, as was her sister, the late Mrs. William Drechsler. Mrs. Lena Steindorff and Miss Anna Thelen, other members of the family of ten, also live in our community."
Jack Bujalski, Jan1999
They farmed in St. Joseph Township, NW 1/4 of SW 1/4 of Sec 30, Twp 30, R19. It was sold to them by Michael J. in 1863 (homesteaded by Michael T. in 1853), Volume B, p499, St.Croix County Courthouse.
