Came to the U.S. circa 1850 with his parents and siblings. Evidently lived at Galena, Illinois for a short time before arriving Houlton, Wisconsin area. Convicted of second degree manslaughter in 1855, he was sentenced to two years in the Wisconsin State Prision at Waupun; served less, as he purchased land in St. Croix County in 1856, per his testimony in 1887 court case involving his mother's estate. Certificate of citizenship dated 22 Oct 1858. After Louisa died in early 1880's, he married his daughter's mother-in-law
[Margaritha Engel, wife of Henry Dierks]. Farmed most of his life. Obituary referred to him as a pioneer of upright character. etc. His gravestone (cost of funeral was $54.00) in St. Michael's Cemetery, Stillwater, Minnesota reads: 02 Feb 1834 - 05 Feb 1898. The descendent living on Michael's farm is: Laverne Anderson, Rte 2, Hudson WI 54016. Michael's will gave all property to his stepson, Charles Dierks, to be held in trust for children until Otto comes of age. On March 30, 1857, Michael magney purchased land from John and Elizabeth Kohler! These are probably the parents of Louisa, who he married seven years later. The land was in St. Croix county, Wisconsin and described as: "The North East quarter of the North West quarter of Section number thirty-five (35) in Township No thirty (30) of Range no twenty (20) West containing forty acres..." On March 15, 1862, he obtained a Sheriff's Deed to the original farm, which had been sold in 1857 and a mortgage taken back, which was defaulted on.
