Bernice Friend, 81, a retired teacher, served as volunteer
Bernice Leigh Friend, 81, of Yuma, Ariz., and formerly of Kankakee, died Wednesday, Feb. 22, 1989, at the Yuma Regional Medical Center.
Visitation will be from noon Monday at the Clancy Funeral Home of Kankakee.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Teresa Catholic Church by the Rev. Joel Fortier.
Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Memorials may be made for the American Arthritis Foundation.
Mrs. Friend was born Oct. 29, 1907 in Fairburn, Wis., to Louis and Anna Clocksein Leigh.
She married Robert Friend on June 29, 1929. He died in 1957.
Surviving are a son, James B. Friend of San Francisco, Calif.; one daughter, Mary Anne Friend of Chicago; four brothers, Bernard of Yuma, Ariz., Robert and Norman of Berlin, Wis., and Donald of Florida; and one sister, Dorothy Drover of Berlin, Wis.
Her parents are deceased.
Mrs. Friend was a retired school teacher and has been active in Kankakee in politics and charitable organizations.
She had been a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Yuma and while a resident here, a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church and the Council of Catholic Women.
Mrs. Friend had also been a member of the Kankakee Country Club, the Kankakee County Republican Women and the Riverside Medical Center Auxiliary.
She had been a volunteer for the Kankakee Chapter of the American Red Cross.
