1771 Surry County NC Tax List
Surry County was created in 1771 from the terrirtory of Rowan County and is located in the north central section of the state on the Virginia boundary. It is commonly held that it was named for Edward Howard, Duke of Norfold, Earl of Surrey but in fact, was named for the County of Surry in England, the birthpalce of governor William Tyron. The enclosed 1771 tax list is the earliest one for the county and contains the names of the head of the households and the number of tithables in that household. The numbers may or may not be for negroes who had to be counted also.
