Introduction
Surry County was formed in 1771 from Rowan County. It is bounded on the north by the Virginia line. In 1777 parts of Surry and the District of Washington were taken to form Wilkes Co. Stokes County was formed in 1789 from Surry, and in 1849 Forsyth County was formed from Stokes. Yadkin County was formed in 1850 from Surry. Ashe County was formed in 1799 from Wilkes, and in 1859 Alleghany County was formed from Ashe. Thus, from 1771-1778, these Surry Couny recors covered the present day counties of Ashe, Alleghany, Wilkes, Surry, Yadkin, Stokes and Forsyth. The county seat is Dobson, North Carolina.

"BROUGHTON -- Job Broughton was born Oct. 30, 1755 at Brunswick County, VA, died March 27, 1738 at Knox County, KY. He maried June 20, 1774 Mary Lewis at Virginia. Mary born March 10, 1756 died April 13, 1838 at Knox County, KY. In 1775 while living in Surry County, NC on the Yadkin River he volunteered under Col. Martin Armstrong, Captain Jabes Jarvis and Lieutenant James Freeman. During this year he volunteered several times to go against the Tories. In the year 1777 he moved to the state of Georgia, Wilkes County and in the fall of that year he was enrolled as a minuteman and took up quarters in Stephen Herd's Fort. He was ordered out as a spy for 18 months. After the War he left Georgia coming to Kentucky settling on Goose Creek in Knox County. He is buried behind Friendship Church, Hammond, KY in Knox County. His children were Wodward married Elizabeth Bluford, Jesse and William married Elizabeth Nicholson.

Note: (Wikipedia) Heard's Fort was built in Wilkes County, Georgia as a stockade in 1774, by Stephen Heard. Heard's Fort was designated the Seat of Government for Georgia on February 3, 1780, a position it held until 1781. The Fort set the groundwork for what become the town of Washington, Georgia. [The Revolutionary Records of the State of Georgia, Vol. I, Part 2, p409, " . . . In May, 1780, Charleston was captured and occupied by the British, and a month later Augusta was occupied by Brown and Grierson, the two notorious Tory leaders, and British soldiers were scattered all over both states. Prior to this, the General Assembly, aware of the defenseless conditon of Augusta, and "deeming it unsafe and impolitic for the Governor and Council to remain thus exposed, designated Heard's Fort, in Wilkes County, as a suitable place of meeting for transacting the business of the government of the state . . . Thus, during nearly all the year 1780, the executive powers were excercised by three members of the Council, Wells, Heard [Stephen] and Davies, in a Fort near where the town of Washington now stands. The entire state had been overrun and was held by the British except two counties, Richmond and Wilkes, and the cause of the patriots seemed lost beyond recovery. A pall of gloom hung over the devasted land until June, 1781, when the British commander at Augusta, together with the entire force under his command, was captured by General Pickens and Colonel Lee, and that important post restored to the patriots. This was the beginning of the end of British rule in Georgia. . . ."
