WELBORN ENDS LIFE MONDAY
Ben Welborn died one mile east of Jordan Monday morning at about 10 a.m. from
a self inflicted rifle wound. His body was first noticed by Frank T. Richeym
freightway driver, who saw the car and a man lying in the ditch. Coroner C. F.
Wilson was informed of the situation by the driver, who hadn't stopped but in
blowing his horn had witnessed no sign of the man's hearing, upon Ritchey's
arrival in Jordan at 10:20 a.m.
Coroner Wilson drove to the scene immediately. Sheriff Wilson E. Cory and
Deputy Henry Jessen were notified and also went out to investigate. The three
men reported that the body of Welborn was found resting on the side of the
highway with a 250-3000 Savage rifle lying at his right side. Two notes were
found in Welborn's shirt pocket addressed to Mrs. Welborn, his brother and
father, which indicated premeditated suicide.
In reconstructing the incident, the officials found that Mr. and Mrs. Welborn
had arrived in Jordan from their Steves Fork ranch at about 9 a.m. The
officials reported that Welborn had evidently taken the car and drove east of
town, turned around, and then parked along the shoulder of the highway about a
mile from town and took his life. Tracks at the scene indicated that Welborn
was sitting at the time he fired the one bullet in the gun through his heart.
Mrs. Welborn reported to Coroner Wilson that Welborn had not been in good
health and had been under a doctor's care for two months. The couple had
planned to go to St. Paul after harvest to visit a doctor recommended to them
by a Billings physician.
Funeral servives are being held this afternoon at Steves Fork with burial at
the Steves Fork cemetery.
Welborn, 48, was born in Kentucky. One year later his parents moved to the
Gallatin Valley and in 1914 they moved to the Lone Tree community of Garfield
county. Since 1928 he's been ranching in the Steves Fork community. He was
married to Mrs. Ethel Teigen in 1932.
He is survived by his parents, his wife, and one stepdaughter, Mrs. Leona
Stepp, Jr. and three grandchildren in Texas.
