Gartmann graduates from diving school
Michael Anthony Gartmann, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gartmann, was graduated Oct. 19 as a professional deep sea diver from the Divers Institute of Technology, Inc., Seattle, after completing six months of intensive training.
Gartmann made qualification dives to 200 feet using various air and helium dioxide mixtures. He learned to complete various underwater tasks including burning and welding while using conventional hard and light weight gear, SCUBA, Hookah, Desco and mixed gas units. In addition to the underwater tasks, he also studied diving physics, physiology, underwater photography, explosives, gas mixing and analyzing, manifold operations, underwater television and sound devices, saturation theory and techniques, recompression chamber operations, and diving safety and standards.
Gartmann is a 1978 graduate of Hudson High School.
Mike died in an early morning crash onI-94 near the Radio Drive exit in Woodbury, Minn. when he rear-ended a semi-truckthat had stopped on the right shoulder of the highway.

Michael Anthony Gartmann, 47, was taken home to the Lord as he wasdriving home from work early Friday morning, August 17.
Mike was born May 5, 1960, in St. Paul, and grew up in Hudson. Hewas a member of St. Patrick’s Church and graduated from Hudson High School withthe class of 1978.
Mike was in the U.S. Navy from 1980 to 1986 and served on the USSEnterprise. In the Navy, Mike received his certificate to become a professionaldeep-sea diver.
In 1984, the met the love of his life, Helen, whom he married Sept.22, 1984. After the Navy, Mike decided to have a career that involved aviation.
He started out at Regent Aviation in St. Paul, and then moved on tobe an ESO at Northwest Airlines.
Mike first and foremost was a dedicated husband, father and friend.He was larger than life, with a great imagination and an electric sense ofhumor. Being with family was the center and fulfillment of his life. He adored,loved and cherished being surrounded by his family. Almost every weekend wasspent at the family cabin, where he would enjoy fishing, hunting, boating andsimply being outdoors.
He also spent much of his time helping others. He was a softballand baseball coach, a volunteer driver for the disability coalition, and anorgan donor. Many would describe Mike as being like a magnet—wherever he was,people would follow. His enchanting smile will truly be missed.
Michael is survived by his beloved and wonderful wife, Helen; andloving children, daughter, Lorna, 22, and son, Joseph, 20. Also survived by hisamazing parents, Robert “Gene” and Carol Gartmann of Knapp; brother, DavidGartmann of Hudson; sister-in-law, Shelly Hawkins of Hammond; brother Peter(Ann) Gartmann of Knapp; sister, Leigh Ann (Nick) Heuman of Menomonie;sisters/brothers-in-law, Jill Ritchie and Sandy Ritchie of Scotland, John andNoreen Mosey of England. He also has two nieces, 11 nephews, two great-nephewsand a godson.
Mass of Christian Burial is at St. Patrick’s Church on Friday, Aug.24, at 11 a.m. Immediately following the funeral Mass, Michael’s celebration oflife will continue at Prospect Park in Hudson.
Interment will be private. Memorials are preferred in lieu offlowers and will be used towards his children’s education.
