Dolly L. Broughton

(4 Aug 1897 - 1 Apr 1963)

The Anaconda Standard, 9 Aug 1896, p13
Says the Miles City Yellowstone Journal: Lou Broughton became a happy father yesterday under most unusual circumstances. He was bringing his wife to town in anticipation of the welcome event, and had arrived in sight of town when the impending probability became an assured fact, and the voice of the young Broughton was heard in the land. With great presence of mind for so newly made a father, Lou wheeled into the road leading to Mrs. Kelly's, and with the help of those at home, soon had his wife and baby comfortably bestowed in bed, and a messenger dispatched for medical attendance. It was a close call, but we are glad to be able to announce that mother and child are doing nicely, and that Lou feels considerably better himself.

According to the Forsyth Directory of 1912, Dollie Broughton was a student in Forsyth living on 11th Avenue. Her mother, Mary E. Broughton, was living in Sanders, Montana at that time.

The Forsyth Times-Journal of 18 April 1912 reported that "Miss Dolly L. Broughton of Forsyth and John M. Collins of Sanders were united in marriage at the Methodist Parsonage on April 17. Only the required witnesses were present. Mr. Collins and his brother have a ranch near Sanders, but at present he is employed by a construction company on the new courthouse. Miss Broughton has lived in Forsyth for several years; coming here from Miles City."

John Collins had a previous marriage and a young son, James L. Collins, who had been born in Arkansas and was about two years old when John and Dolly were married. Nothing has been found on the first marriage or the Collins ranch at Sanders.

Using existing census records we learn that John worked in the oil fields and the family moved around. They were still in Montana when son, John Melvin, was born in 1915. Two years later when daughter, Thelma is born, they are in Oklahoma, and are still in Oklahoma when son, Joda, is born in 1922. In 1930 and 1940 they are in Kansas where son, Raymond, is born. Some time after that they make the move to Stanislaus county, California where they are living when Dolly's mother, Mary Elizabeth (Kingsley-Broughton-Winey-Maas) comes to live with them sometime after the death of her brother, Arthur Kingsley, in 1946.
