In December, 1997, I asked Theresa about the "Dust Bowl" years we read about in our history books, and how it affected her and Harry. She said that while they didn't lose any cattle themselves, the draught caused quite a hardship on the farmers. She recalled neighbors, Schroeders, losing a horse because it had eaten so much sand trying to get at what little grass there was, that it couldn't survive. Harry bought hay from up north that was half weeds and sticks but the cattle were so hungry that they'd eat practically anything. [NH]

FALL DOWN STAIRS FATAL TO ST. JOE TOWNSHIP FARMER
Harry E. Dierks, 59, prominent St. Joseph township farmer, died early Friday morning at Lakeview Hospital, Stillwater, from injuries sustained in a fall down stairs at his home six hours earlier. It was reported he was sleep walking about midnight and fell down the stairs. He was taken by ambulance to the Stillwater hospital.
Born in Houlton, August 6, 1895, he was the son of the late Charles and Anna Dierks.
He received his education at the McKinley School in the township of St. Joseph and later owned and operated a farm in that township for many years. He also served on the town board for a number of years.
On November 12, 1930, he was married to Theresa Gartmann.
Services were from the Burke Funeral Home Monday, October 25, at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. Norman P. Scheide, pastor of Bethel Lutheran church officiating.
He is survived by his wife; a brother, Leonard, of Detroit and a half-brother, Ben Sargent, of the town of St. Joseph.
During the services, Mrs. Oscar Sandberg was organist and Miss Emma Engebretson was vocal soloist.
Interment was in Willow River cemetery. Pallbearers were Joe, Max and Robert Gartmann, Carl Johnson, Albert Hanson and John Anderson.

[NH: I recall hearing that Harry was going to the bathroom from their bedroom and had to cross through a short narrow hallway. The stairway lead down from the hallway. He mis-stepped in the dark and fell. He never regained consciousness.]
