Dorothy Elizabeth Casanova, 91, of WinterGreen, and a longtime resident of Hudson, died Tuesday, April 4.
She was born Dec. 7, 1914, in St. Paul, the daughter of Truman and Emma (Steinbrenner) Alcorn. She moved with her parents to South St. Paul in 1918, graduated from South St. Paul High School and then attended Globe Business School in St. Paul.
In 1937 she was chosen Hook 'Em Cow Queen of South St. Paul for the Winter Carnival and made numerous appearances in parades including riding horses and a bull down the streets of St. Paul.
On Sept. 19, 1946, she was married to Raymond Benedict Casanova and moved to Hudson. He was the son of Joseph A. and Catherine (Karras) Csanova of Hudson.
While raising her family, she also owned and operated the Hudson House Continental Coiffures Beauty Shop for many years and was part owners/bookkeeper of Alcorn Beverage and Tru Poperties in South St. Paul.
A talented and creative homemaker she was active in numerous church and civic activities including being a charter member of the Hudson Garden Club, Hudson Country Club and the St. Croix Valley Arts Guild.
Any of her Cub Scout troop members of the 1950s can testify she was a fun-loving and energetic den leader.
An accomplished athlete who fished, hunted, golfed and skied, she followed sports avidly until her death, cheering the Vikings and her grandsons as they pursued careers in winter sports.
A woman of elegance and great dignity, she was known for her classic, polished style and gracious entertaining. She was an able hostess for many dinners for family and friends throughout her life and was an excellent cook.
She believe life should be celebrated, could make any occasion into a party and shared many stories of her life. She was a devout Christian and believer and devoted mother and grandmother.
Surviving are her two sons, Patrick R. (Linda) Casanova of Hudson and Dr. Joseph Anthony "Tony" (Leslie Cumming) Casanova of Boulder, Colo.; Patrick, Michael and Joseph Casanova of Hudson.
Preceding her in death were he husband, Raymond Casanova, in 1988; her parents, Truman and Emma Alcorn; a sister, Delores Ann Johnson in 1992; and a brother-in-law, Charles G. "Chuz" Johnson in 1998.
The Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, April 8, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Hudson with Fr. John Parr officiating. Visitation at the O'Connell Funeral Home. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery.
