Luke and his father Richard, appear to have spent time in Old Rappahanock Co, VA before moving to SMC, MD according to the Combs researchers.

Luke Gardner, a freeholder of St. Clement's Manor, was the son of Richard and Elizabeth Gardner (or Garnett) who immigrated to Maryland in 1637 with sons, Luke, Richard (then 21 years of age), John (then age 4), and daughters Elizabeth (then 19) and Julian (then 6). (Patents 1:17, 25, 38-9, 61-62, 1:167-8, AB&H:60-66)
1654: in the spring of 1654 a complaint was lodged against Luke Gardner, "who ... did in a refractory and insolent manner detain Eleanor Hatton," niece of Secretary Hatton (a Protestant), "endeavoring to train her in the Catholic religion contrary to the will of her mother and uncle." Lt. Richard Bankes, who had married Eleanor's widowed mother, was authorized to go and take the girl from Gardner. (Gardner, then or later, was the husband of Eleanor's sister Elizabeth.) "LUKE GARDINER lived near Newtown Hundred where the Jesuits had estab.an early mission. In 1661, Catholics in the area gave subscriptions for a church and graveyard which were to serve the Catholics of Newtown, St. Clement's, and St. George's Hundred."
"...In addition to LUKE GARDINER, twenty-seven men worshipped at the Newtown Church before 1674. The men were: WM BRETTON, NICHOLAS CAUSINE, ROBERT CLARKE, EDW. COTTON, THOS. Luke Gardiner was transported into the province on August 9, 1637 withReverend Thomas Copley, S.J. Luke Gardiner was completing his educationwith the Jesuits before joining his parents in the new Colony ofMaryland. (Colonial Settlers St. Clements Bay 1634 -1780 St. Mary'sCounty, Maryland by Mary Louise Donnely.)
In 1642 when the Puritans had their rebellion in Maryland, the Manor andPlantation of Richard Gardiner, a Catholic, was seized. The Gardiner'stook refuge in Rappahonnock, Virginia during the rebellion. LUKE GARDINERand his Sister JULIANA returned to Maryland in 1647 and LUKE GARDINERtried to obtain his father's property which had been confiscated, alongwith other Catholics' property(Patents AB&H:4). In 1650 LUKE GARDINERtransported RICHARD GARDINER his Father and his 2nd wife and their youngdaughter JULIANA, his Brothers and sisters, and two servants back to theprovince of Maryland (Patent 1:167-168) The record states "LUKEGARDINER's mother was deceased". Because of the hardships they sufferedwhile in exile, all of the family died shortly after returning toMaryland except LUKE. On 8/26/1651 LORD BALTIMORE instructed GOVERNORWILLIAM STONE to re-Grant "St.
Richard's" to LUKE GARDINER, the son and Heir of RICHARD GARDINER.
