George Washington Courts
(6 May 1761 - 25 May 1847)
Notes:
George Washington Courts
George Washington Courts, son of Robert Henley Courts & Elizabeth Yeates, was born Charles County, MD. May 6, 1761 and died at Rockingham County, North Carolina. He was a Revolutionary War Soldier and his grave is marked in Rockingham County. Varying details can be uncovered on this George W, all family data and Bibles indicate that he was married three times, however unproved. His known marriage will be proved by the Bible transcript attached to follow. He died May-1847, Rockingham. Apparently he ran away from his father's estate in Charles County to Stafford County, Virginia, just across the Potomac River where he joined the Continental Army. He married in Culpeper County to Hannah HUDNALL, where his son Jennings Hudnall Courts was born, Oct. 20, 1798. Hannah Hudnall was the dau. of John Hudnall & Jemima Jennings Hudnall, granddaughter of Augustine Jennings of Fauquier County and his wife Leanna Williams. Augustine Jennings will was pro. Fauquier County, 1778. [Culpeper County Deed Book W, p. 74: John & Jemima Hudnall deed of gift to dau. Hannah Courts, wife of George Courts, Feb. 18, 1802, 250 acres on the Rappahannock River.] [John Hudnall's will, Caswell County, N. C. 1815, mentions granddaughter Elizabeth R. Courts.] Though many persons have filed claims on George Washington Courts for the Revolution, some showing that he married (1) Zippora Cooper, and (2) Chloe Tolson, it does not seem possible that he could have done so before he was 30 years old, and had Elizabeth, first child by Hannah Hudnall, born 1796.there seems no proof to be found that he married twice prior. Data are not complete on all of his children with the exception of his son Jennings Hudnall Courts, to follow, per extant Bible. His known children were Elizabeth, born 1796 married George Brooks (not proved), Jennings Hudnall Courts, born Nov. Oct. 20, 1798, to follow, who died in Henry County, Tenn. Feb. 20, 1867. Daniel W. born 1800 married a Miss Waugh (not proved), Lucy Ann married John Williams, brother of Eliza. The will of Geo. -W. Courts, 1847 has not been obtained from Rockingham Co, N. C.
