Generation No. 1
1. SARAH died in Charles County MD. She married (1) JOHN COFER abt 1662. He was born in England, and died abt 1669 in Charles County MD. She married (2) HENRY BARNES abt 1670 in Charles County MD. He was born in Charles County MD, and died abt 1676 in Charles County MD. She married (3) JOHN GODSHELL abt 1677 in Charles County MD.
John Cofer the emigrant died sometime before 1675, and his wife Sarah remarried to Henry Barnes of Charles Chares Co MD. Barnes himself was deceased by 5 Oct 1676 when his will, dated 11 Oct 1675, was proved in Charles Co MD naming son Matthew Barnes, daughter Christian Barnes, and "sons" Thomas, Francis and John Cofer. "Personalty was left to an Edmond/Edward" Barnes. Henry's wife, Sarah, was named executor. In early wills, the terms "son" and "step-son" were often used interchangeably. If in fact Thomas, Francis and John Cofer ware step-sons of Henry, then this would imply that Henry's wife Sarah was indeed the relict of John Cofer the emigrant. Following Henry's death, the widow Sarah married thirdly John Godshall of Charles County.
1675-Charles County MD~will for Henry Barne entered 11 Oct 1675 and proved 5 Oct 1676. Abstract in Maryland Calendar of Wills (Jane Baldwin Cotton) reads to son Matthew Barnes, dau. Christian Barnes, sons Thomas, Francis and John Coster [sic], and to Edmond Barnes, personalty. Wife Sarah Barnes named executor, Overseers: Robert Robins and Charles Culles. Test: Robert Robins, Wm. Standford, Edward Barnes: It seems highly like that the three "sons" mentioned i,e. Thomas, Francis and John Coster are in fact Thomas, Francis and John Coffer.
MD Prerogative Court records show that an inventory for Henry Barnes' estate, dated 10 Sep 1677, mentions appraisers as Robert Robins and William Liddeford. The account for Barnes' estate was dated 19 Oct 1677 and named executrix Sarah Godshall (relict) suggesting that Barnes' wife Sarah had, by this time, remarried to a Mr. (probably John) Godshall of Charles. But note, there is a Charles deed for a tract "St. Bridget's" from John Godshall and wife Mary. If this is same John Godshall, may indicate Sarah Barnes Godshall had died.
Notes for JOHN COFER:
John Cofer was among 24 headrights transported to Virginia by Nathaniel Pope some time before 14 May 1660. Nathaniel Pope left a will in Westmoreland County, VA dated 16 May 1659 and proved 26 April 1660. In the settlement of Pope's estate, these headrights devolved to Thomas Pope, Nathaniel's oldest son, and Maj. John Washington who had married Anne Pope, Nathaniel's daughter. Subsequently, on 4 Sep 1661, Thomas Pope and Maj. John Washington claimed 1200 acres in Westmoreland County by virtue of the transportation of 24 persons, including John Cofer. President George Washington, born at Pope's Creek Plantation in Westmoreland County, VA was a descendant Maj. John Washington and his wife, Anne Pope.
The MD land records indicate that John Cofer transported himself and his wife into Charles County, MD some time before 1669. This indicates that Cofer married his wife, whose name was probably Sarah, in VA before moving across the Potomac River into MD. In fact, it appears that Cofer and his wife were living in Charles County by 25 Nov 1663, the date of birth of his son John. A second son, Thomas Cofer, was born in Charles County on 15 Aug 1667. A third son, Francis Cofer, was born soon after, probably c. 1672. There were probably one or more daughters.
