Individual Details
Hermann Doors
(16 Sep 1663 - 14 Oct 1739)
He came to Germantown in 1684, with no wife. I t is possible he was married, but his wife had died. He lived as a "bachelor"; alone, for about 40 years.
Herman Doors bapt 16 Nov 1663 Kaldenkirchen Reformed, in PA by 1684, d in Germantown 14 Oct 1739. Krefeld Immigr article says no record of a marriage. Wm Penn and the Dutch Quakers takes posn that he was married to Jenneken Jansen, whose name is on the marriage certificate of 1681 opposite his. She could have died bef he came to Germantown to live for about 55 yrs as a widower (termed "bachelor" which meant not having a wife). jenneken Jansen may have been a sister of Henderjik Jansen.
1682-Herman is mentioned in connection with Reynear Tyson in the Streyper correspondence as brother of the wife of Jan Streypers, of Kaldenkirchen, near Crefeld, who purchased 5000 acres of land of William Penn on March 10, 1682.
Came to Germantown 1684
Other names:
Herman Daurss
Herman Dors
Herman Dorst
There is no record of a marriage for Herman Doors. The book "William Penn and the Dutch Quaker MIgration to Pennsylvania" offers the following supposition:
"The name of Jenneken Jansen appears on the marriage certificate of 1681, just opposite that of Herman Daurss, and it is possible that she was his wife. No trace is found of her in Pennsylvania archives, and if she died before Herman's removl to Germantown, her illness in 1683 may have accounted for his not sailing in that year, while her death the next year would have enabled him to follow his Krefeld comrades to Germantown, but left him to live there the lonely life of a widower. It is true that the notice of his death refers to him as a 'Batchelor'; but this term was loosely used for a 'single' person, and he had lived un-married in Pennsylvania for fifty-five years. Jenneken Jansen may have been a sister of Henderijck Jansen."
