Death
Col. Charles Lee “Charlie” Furr, 66, of Rt. 2, Staunton, died Saturday, Aug. 10, 1991 at 5:47 p.m. He was brn on Jan. 3, 1925, in Staunton; a son of the late Erskine M. and Julia Catherine Dull Furr. Since 1944 Mr. Furr had been a public auctioneer in the real estate and livestock business, and he was the oldest auctioneer in the state who was still active. He was a member of the Virginia Auctioneer's Association. He was a member of the Mint Spring United Methodist Church and was financial secretary for the church for many years. He was also a charter member of the Mint Spring Ruritan Club. He was a graduate of the Beverley Manor High School and the Dunsmore Business College. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Ballew Furr on March 29, 1985. Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Susan Lynn (Furr) Jordan of Rt. 2, Staunton; three grandsons, Brian Michael Jordan, Jason Scott Jordan and Daniel Lewis Jordan; a brother, Joseph E. Furr of Staunton; and several nieces and nephews. A service was conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Mint Spring United Methodist Church by the Rev. Homer Lemaster and Dr. Robert Goshorn. Burial was in Thornrose Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Billy Lockridge, J. Kemper Croft, Judge William S. Moffett, Dr. H. Lynn Moore, Joe S. Stuart, Dan Surrattt, Gregory Warnock, Alan Bocock, and Ronald E. Brubeck. Honorary pallbearers were employees of the Staunton Union Stock Yards, Inc., and Rockingham Livestock Sales, Inc., and the local members of the Virginia Auctioneer's Association. It is suggested that those desiring may make memorial donations to the memorial Trust Fund of Staunton-Augusta County Rescue Squad, 1601 N.
