Death
Mrs. Rebecca Ann Diehl, 80, widow of Author [Arthur] Jacob Diehl, died unexpectedly Friday afternoon at 1:50 at her home. Mrs. Diehl had been in declining health for several years, although her condition did not turn for the worse until late Thursday evening. Her passing brought sorrow to her many friends and acquaintances, who knew her as a kind, friendly and humble person, who always had a word of cheer for those she loved. A daughter of the late Conrad and Frances Baker Long, she was born Oct. 8, 1873, in the Cross Keys community. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren from early girlhood and an active member of the Barren Ridge Church of the Brethren. Mr. Diehl died May 24, 1949. She is survived by seven daughters; Mrs. Alvin (Frances) Miller, Camp Hill, Pa; Mrs. Edgar (Lillie) Lingle, Grantville, Pa.; Mrs. Lester ( Hattie) Unger, Lebanon Pa.; Mrs. Edward (Bessie) Flory, Grottoes; Mrs. Paul (Mary) Coffman, New Hope; Mrs. Harold (Anna) Furr, Staunton; Miss Mae Diehl, at home. Two sons, Homes S. Diehl, Hummelstown, Pa., and Russell C. Diehl, of Staunton. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Willie Driver, Weyers Cave; Mrs. Ida Cline, New Hope; and Miss Ottie Long of Dayton. Also a number of grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Middle River Church of the Brethren, with the Rev. Homer Miller in charge, assisted by the Rev. John Goswell. Interment will be in adjoining cemetery. Pallbearers will be nephews. The body now rests at the Long funeral home at Cross Keys, where it will remain until 3:30 Saturday afternoon, when it will be taken to her late home until the hour of service. Relatives are asked to meet at Mrs. Diehl's late home Sunday afternoon at two o'clock for a short service to leaving for the church.Endnotes
