Freeman Harold FURR

Freeman Harold Furr served in the U.S. Navy from December 23, 1944 to July 9, 1946, achieving the rank of Motor Machinests's Mate 3rd Class. During this hitch he served as a lookout for 1 year, 2 months and as an engineman on LSM(R) 402. He served again from July 9, 1946 to July 9, 1954, achieving the rank of Engineman 1st Class. Freeman Furr has written two books on Benton County war veterans which cover from the Revolutionary War to the Gulf War. He has written four books on Benton County history, from 1784 to 1949, called "The Stars in the Prairie". Benton County has over 3,000 veterans. Mr. Furr has almost all their military discharges on file in his office. He has been employed as the Benton County Veterans' Service Officer since January 1, 1996.

Death
Freeman Harold Furr, 84, of Fowler, died in his home, Monday, February 13, 2012. He was born March 14, 1927, to the late Ferman A. & Laura Ellen (Copenhaver) Furr. He married Jeanette Fox, September 14, 1947, in Fowler; she died October 1, 2000. He then married Josephine Fox, September 16, 2001, in Remington. He graduated from Fowler High School. He had worked as a store owner, writer & builder of a subdivision in Fowler. He was a World War II Veteranserving in the United States Navy for 9 years. He was a member of the Fowler United Methodist Church, Past Commander of the Fowler American Legion Post #57, Past Commander of the former Fowler VFW Post #1348 & President of the Benton County Historical Society. He has also served for several years as the Benton County Veterans Affairs Officer. Surviving with his wife is a Son James Furr, wife, Sandy, Fowler, 2 Granddaughters, Laura Wallace & Becky Furr & 3 Great-Grandchildren. His first wife, 4 Brothers & 3 Sisters preceded him in death. Visitation will be Friday, February 17, 2012, from 4:00 PM until time of service at 6:00 PM, at the Fowler United Methodist Church, with Pastor Brenda Ludwig officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will take place at a later date. Memorial Contributions, may be made to the Benton County Historical Society.
