Death
Furr Dies Wholesale Grocer 73 Had Been Civic Affairs Leader Archie Furr, 78, of 1737B, retired wholesale grocer and civic leader, died Wednesday evening. Mr. Furr owned and operated the Furr and Co. wholesale grocery firm, which he organized in 1930, until his retirement several years ago. The firm was sold to H. P. Lau Co. He served as president of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce in 1937 and later headed the Chamber's Greater Lincoln Committee. Born in Creston, IA., Mr. Furr had resided in Lincoln for 75 years. He served as manager of Grainger Brothers Co., wholesale grocery firm, from 1923 to 1928 when he became associated with Freadrich Brothers. Mr. Furr served as president of the Lincoln Civic Music Assn. for several years, and was a member of the Lincoln Kiwanis Club, Elks Lodge, Lincoln Inter-Civic Council, Lincoln Symphony Orchestra Assn., and the Lincoln Dinner Club. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite and Shrine. Mr. Furr belonged to St. Paul Methodist Church. Mr. and Mrs. Furr had celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary August 20, 1958. Survivors include his wife, Mattie B.; two sons, Houghton Furr of Lincoln and Coleman Furr of Puerto Rico; two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Nelson of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Mrs. Thais Weadling, of Prescott, Ariz., 13 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.Lincoln Evening Journal and Nebraska State Journal, June 8, 1961
