MT. CRAWFORD, July 12, - Thomas Jefferson Saufley, 88, a well-known retired farmer who resided near here, died at Rockingham Memorial Hospital this morning. He had been in declining health for seven years, his condition becoming more serious in November when he suffered a fractured hip. Mr. Saufley was born July 4, 1869 near Port Republic, the oldest son of of the late Newton Brown and Josephine Null Saufley, He was a devout member of the Mt. Olivet United Brethren Church. He took a keen interest in the missions and the progress of the church college and contributed generously to the support of his church and church colleges. On Dec 24, 1890, he was united in marriage to Alda Floss Bennett of McGaheysville, who preceded him in death, March 18, 1936. Mr. Saufley is survived by ten children, Kenny H. Saufley of Grottoes; Perry D. Saufley of Adair, Ill.; Mrs. Lorena Sipe of Weyers Cave; Floyd N. Saufley of Grottoes; Mrs. Ellen Wonderly of Grottoes; George N. Saufley of Port Republic; Jannie Frances Saufley at home; Rev. Charles A. Saufley of Chambersburg, Pa.; Flossie Marie Saufley of Huntington, Ind. He also leaves two sisters, Mrs. Belle Haugh of Penn Lairs and Mrs. Bessie Wise of Ponica City, Okla. Two brothers, Grover Cleveland Saufley of Hummelstown, Pa., and Hubert Brown Saufley of Palmyra, Pa., also survive. Forty-three grandchildren, 48 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday from the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren, with burial in the Shady Grove Cemetery. The Rev. Carl V. Hinkle, assisted by the Rev. Leroy Perry of Waynesboro, Pa., and the Rev. I. B. Long of Harrisonburg will have charge of the service. Active pallbearers will be: Warren and Paul Saufley, Donald and Raymond Saufley and Ralph and Andrew Wonderly. Honorary pallbearers will be: De. J. E. Harshbarger, Whitney Michael, Robert Calhoun, Olen Hausenflook, Kemper Jarrels, Otis Bowman, C. E. Sandridge, Virgil Pence, Otis Tutwiler, Brown Stoutamyer, Roscoe Michael and Robert Rawley. Active and honorary pallbearers are asked to meet at the church Thursday afternoon at 1:45. The immediate family is asked to meet at the late home Thursday afternoon at 1:30. The body will remain at Long Funeral Home until 12:45 Thursday afternoon when it will be place in the church to lie in state until the hour of the services.Harrisonburg Daily News, July 13, 1955
